What happens during a well-child care exam?

Well-child exams are tailored based on your child’s age, overall health, and any current symptoms. These comprehensive head-to-toe visits usually include: measurements height and weight and plotting these measurements on standardized growth curves, review of vaccination needs, vision and hearing screening. blood pressure and pulse rate, and lead screening. Dr. Yee and his team will also talk with you about your child’s eating habits, sleep patterns, dental screening and care, and school performance, if they’re of school age.

How often does my child need a checkup?

This depends on the child’s age. Your child experiences dramatic growth during their first few years of life and to ensure they’re developing properly, frequent pediatric exams are essential during this time. As long as your child is generally healthy by age 3, they typically only need to come into Yee Medicine and Pediatric Associates once a year. Once your child reaches school age, their school or sporting club might require specialized exams. In this case, you can request a school or sports physical as needed, or combine it with your child’s annual physical. Of course if at any time, your little one gets sick outside of their regularly scheduled well-child care visits, you can always come into Yee Medicine and Pediatric Associates for sick visits.

How do I prepare for a well-child care visit?

You can do a few simple things to prepare for your child’s well-child care visit at Yee Medicine and Pediatric Associates. Depending on any medical issues your child has been through since your last visit, or any school or sports requirements, it can be helpful to bring in medical records from any other provider your child has been to since his previous visit, have a list of any new medications they take, bring in any forms needed for school or sports filled our with your child’s information, and a short list of concerns. It can also be helpful to make sure your child is well-rested. Little ones, in particular, can be fussy and uncomfortable during doctor’s exams if they’re tired.
